2. Does Montana require a permit to buy a firearm?

+

No state permit is required to purchase a firearm in Montana beyond the federal background check process. All firearm purchases from a licensed dealer require ATF Form 4473 and a NICS background check. Buyers must meet all applicable federal eligibility requirements, including minimum age requirements of 21 for handguns and 18 for long guns purchased from a licensed dealer. Montana does not impose a state-level waiting period beyond the federal background check.

3. Can I carry a firearm in Montana without a permit?

+

Yes. Montana has constitutional carry, allowing law-abiding residents who are legally permitted to possess a firearm to carry it openly or concealed without a state-issued permit. You must still meet all state and federal eligibility requirements to legally possess and carry a firearm. Montana residents who want to carry in other states or maintain reciprocity benefits can obtain an optional Montana Concealed Weapons Permit through their county sheriff.

4. What firearms are best for Montana elk hunting?

+

Montana elk hunting demands a firearm and caliber capable of reliable terminal performance on large, heavy-boned game at the varying distances encountered across Big Sky country’s diverse mountain and prairie terrain. Bolt action rifles in proven elk calibers including .300 Winchester Magnum, .338 Winchester Magnum, .30-06 Springfield, .308 Winchester, and 7mm Remington Magnum with controlled-expansion hunting bullets are the top choice for Montana elk hunters. Semi-automatic rifles in appropriate calibers are also legal. Always verify current Montana FWP regulations for your specific game management unit and season before purchasing.

5. What is the best handgun for concealed carry in Montana?

+

The best concealed carry handgun depends on your body type, clothing, preferred carry position, and experience level. Compact and subcompact semi-automatic pistols in 9mm are the most popular choice among Montana constitutional carry holders due to their balance of capacity, shootability, and concealability. Many Montana outdoor enthusiasts also carry a magnum revolver in bear country as a backup to a primary defensive pistol. The staff at On Target Outdoors can help you evaluate fit, capacity, and carry comfort for your specific needs across the Laurel and Yellowstone Valley area.

6. What shotguns does On Target Outdoors carry for Montana waterfowl hunting?

+

On Target Outdoors carries pump action and semi-automatic shotguns well suited for Montana waterfowl hunting along the Yellowstone River corridor and surrounding wetlands. Federal law requires non-toxic shot for all migratory waterfowl hunting, so steel, bismuth, or tungsten loads are required for duck and goose hunting. Gas-operated semi-automatic shotguns are popular for waterfowl due to their ability to soften the recoil of heavy steel loads over a long cold-weather hunt. Always use a choke rated for steel shot and verify current Montana FWP regulations before your hunt.

7. Are AR-platform rifles legal in Montana?

+

Yes. AR-platform rifles are legal to purchase, own, and use in Montana for eligible residents. Montana has no state-level assault weapons ban or magazine capacity restrictions beyond what is required under federal law. All purchases require a federal background check and completion of ATF Form 4473. Buyers must meet all applicable state and federal eligibility requirements to take possession of a firearm.

8. Does On Target Outdoors run background checks on all firearm sales?

+

Yes. All firearm sales at On Target Outdoors include ATF Form 4473 and a NICS background check as required by federal law. Every buyer must meet all applicable federal and Montana state eligibility requirements to complete a purchase. On Target Outdoors complies fully with all applicable state and federal regulations governing the sale and transfer of firearms.
