Frequently Asked Questions About Handguns

1. What handguns does On Target Outdoors carry?

+

On Target Outdoors carries a broad selection of handguns including semi-automatic pistols, revolvers, AR pistols, AK pistols, single shot handguns, and derringers across major brands, calibers, and configurations. Whether you are shopping for a compact everyday carry pistol, a powerful magnum revolver for Montana backcountry, or a precision single shot hunting handgun, stop in or check online for current inventory across all available brands and configurations.

2. Can I carry a handgun in Montana without a permit?

+

Yes. Montana has constitutional carry, allowing law-abiding residents who are legally permitted to possess a firearm to carry it openly or concealed without a state-issued permit. You must still meet all state and federal eligibility requirements to legally possess and carry a firearm. Montana residents who want to carry in other states or maintain reciprocity benefits can obtain an optional Montana Concealed Weapons Permit through their county sheriff.

3. What handgun should I carry for Montana backcountry bear country?

+

For Montana backcountry carry in grizzly and black bear habitat, many experienced hunters and outdoor workers carry a powerful magnum revolver in .44 Magnum, .454 Casull, .460 S&W Magnum, or 10mm Auto loaded with hard-cast or bonded penetrating bullets designed to reach vital organs on large animals. Standard defensive hollow points are not recommended as primary bear defense loads due to insufficient penetration on bears. Many Montana outdoor workers carry a magnum revolver alongside their primary defensive pistol when working in bear country. Consult current Montana FWP guidelines and bear safety resources for your specific area.

4. What is the best handgun for concealed carry in Montana?

+

The best concealed carry handgun depends on your body type, clothing, preferred carry position, and experience level. Compact and subcompact semi-automatic pistols in 9mm are the most popular choice among Montana constitutional carry holders due to their balance of capacity, shootability, and concealability. Montana’s varied climate and outdoor lifestyle mean many carriers alternate between smaller summer carry guns and larger winter options when heavier clothing makes a full-size pistol easier to conceal. The staff at On Target Outdoors can help you evaluate fit, capacity, and carry comfort for your specific carry needs in Laurel and the Yellowstone Valley.

5. Are AR pistols and AK pistols legal in Montana?

+

Yes. AR-platform and AK-platform pistols are legal to purchase, own, and use in Montana for eligible residents. Montana has no state-level assault weapons ban or magazine capacity restrictions beyond what is required under federal law. All purchases require a federal background check and completion of ATF Form 4473. Buyers must meet all applicable federal and Montana state eligibility requirements to take possession of a firearm.

6. What is a single shot handgun and who uses it in Montana?

+

A single shot handgun is a purpose-built pistol designed to fire one cartridge per loading, typically chambered in powerful rifle or hunting calibers that generate too much recoil or pressure for conventional semi-automatic designs. Single shot handguns are popular among Montana handgun hunters pursuing mule deer, pronghorn, and elk at extended distances, where the platform’s precision and caliber versatility allow for ethical shots on big game that conventional pistols cannot reliably achieve. They are often fitted with a scope for improved accuracy at hunting distances.

7. What is a derringer and is it a practical carry option in Montana?

+

A derringer is a very small, compact single-shot or two-shot handgun designed for deep concealment where a larger pistol is not practical. They are available in popular defensive calibers and represent the absolute minimum in size and weight, making them a practical backup carry option for Montana constitutional carry holders who want a secondary or deep concealment firearm. Their limited capacity makes them best suited as a backup rather than a primary carry gun. The staff at On Target Outdoors can help you determine whether a derringer fits your specific carry needs.

8. Does On Target Outdoors run background checks on all handgun sales?

+

Yes. All handgun purchases at On Target Outdoors include ATF Form 4473 and a NICS background check as required by federal law. Buyers must be at least 21 years of age and meet all applicable federal and Montana state eligibility requirements to complete a handgun purchase. On Target Outdoors complies fully with all applicable state and federal regulations governing the sale and transfer of handguns.
