Montana hunters should consult Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks for current regulations on legal shot types, gauges, and loads for specific game seasons. Frequently Asked Questions About Shotguns

What shotguns does On Target Outdoors carry?

+

On Target Outdoors carries a broad selection of shotguns including pump action, semi-automatic, over/under, lever action, bolt action, and single shot configurations from well-regarded manufacturers. Options span field hunting models, home defense configurations, competitive clay target platforms, and dedicated slug guns for Montana deer season across multiple gauges. Stop in or check online for current shotgun inventory across all available brands, platforms, and configurations.

What shotgun is best for Montana waterfowl hunting?

+

For Montana waterfowl hunting along the Yellowstone River corridor and surrounding wetlands, a 12 gauge pump action or semi-automatic shotgun with a 28- or 30-inch barrel and a choke rated for steel shot is the standard recommendation. Gas-operated semi-automatic shotguns are particularly popular for waterfowl because their operating system softens the recoil of heavy steel loads through a long cold day in the blind. Federal law requires non-toxic shot for all migratory waterfowl hunting in Montana. Always verify current Montana FWP regulations before your hunt.

What shotgun is best for Montana pheasant and upland bird hunting?

+

For pheasant hunting across the agricultural land and grassland surrounding Laurel and the Yellowstone Valley, and for Hungarian partridge and sharp-tailed grouse across Montana’s rolling prairie country, a 12 or 20 gauge pump action or over/under with an improved cylinder or modified choke and quality field loads covers most flushing distances effectively. Over/under configurations are popular among upland hunters who appreciate the refined trigger and field aesthetics of a break-action gun. Lead shot is legal for upland game in Montana. Check current Montana FWP season dates and regulations before heading afield.

Can I use a shotgun for deer hunting in Montana?

+

Yes. Shotguns with rifled slugs or sabot slugs are legal for Montana deer hunting and are a practical option in areas where close-range shots in timbered terrain are the norm. Rifled slugs through a smooth-bore barrel and sabot slugs through a fully rifled barrel are both effective at close to moderate deer hunting distances. Dedicated bolt action slug guns deliver the best slug accuracy for Montana deer hunters who want to maximize their effective range with a slug setup. Always verify current Montana FWP regulations for your specific hunting district and season.

What is the difference between a pump action and a semi-automatic shotgun?

+

A pump action shotgun requires the shooter to manually cycle the action between shots by working the fore-end, making it mechanically simple, highly reliable, and compatible with virtually any load from light target shells to heavy magnum rounds. A semi-automatic shotgun cycles automatically after each shot using gas operation or inertia, enabling faster follow-up shots and notably reduced felt recoil. Pump actions are valued for their load versatility and dependability in cold, wet Montana field conditions. Semi-autos are popular for waterfowl and high-volume hunting days where cycling speed and reduced recoil make a real difference.

What is an over/under shotgun best used for in Montana?

+

Over/under shotguns are the premier platform for competitive clay target shooting including sporting clays, skeet, and trap, offering a refined trigger, consistent swing, and the balance and fit that competitive shooters and serious upland hunters demand. They are also popular among Montana upland hunters pursuing pheasant, Huns, and sharp-tailed grouse, where two well-placed shots at close to moderate range cover most field situations. The over/under’s break-action design allows quick visual confirmation of a clear chamber and straightforward operation for shooters of all experience levels.

Are short-barreled shotguns legal in Montana?

+

Short-barreled shotguns with a barrel under 18 inches or an overall length under 26 inches are regulated under the National Firearms Act. They are legal to own in Montana for eligible residents but require ATF registration, a $200 tax stamp, and approval before taking possession. The process typically takes several months. On Target Outdoors can assist customers through the NFA transfer process for any short-barreled shotgun configurations they are interested in.

Does On Target Outdoors run background checks on all shotgun sales?

+

Yes. All shotgun purchases at On Target Outdoors include ATF Form 4473 and a NICS background check as required by federal law. Buyers must be at least 18 years of age and meet all applicable federal and Montana state eligibility requirements to complete a shotgun purchase. On Target Outdoors complies fully with all applicable state and federal regulations governing the sale and transfer of shotguns.
