Local And Compliance Notes

On Target Outdoors is the trusted firearms dealer in Laurel, Montana, and serves customers in the nearby cities of Park City, Joliet, Columbus, and Billings. All pump action shotgun purchases at On Target Outdoors are conducted in full compliance with federal and Montana state law, including ATF Form 4473 and a NICS background check for every firearm sale. Montana follows all applicable federal regulations governing the purchase and transfer of firearms and related products.

Montana has constitutional carry, allowing law-abiding residents who are legally permitted to possess a firearm to carry it openly or concealed without a state-issued permit. Montana imposes no state-level waiting period beyond the federal background check process. Buyers must meet all applicable federal eligibility requirements, including a minimum age of 18 for shotgun purchases from a licensed dealer. Short-barreled shotguns with a barrel under 18 inches or an overall length under 26 inches are regulated under the National Firearms Act and require ATF registration, a $200 tax stamp, and approval prior to transfer.

Montana hunters should consult Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks for current regulations on legal shot types, gauges, and loads for specific game seasons. Federal law requires non-toxic shot for all migratory waterfowl hunting nationwide, so steel, bismuth, or tungsten loads are required for duck and goose hunting along the Yellowstone River and surrounding Montana wetlands. Lead shot remains legal for upland game hunting including pheasant, Hungarian partridge, sharp-tailed grouse, and turkey. Frequently Asked Questions About Pump Action Shotguns

What pump action shotguns does On Target Outdoors carry?

+

On Target Outdoors carries a selection of pump action shotguns from well-regarded manufacturers in 12 gauge and other popular configurations, covering field hunting models, defensive setups, and slug gun configurations for Montana deer season. Options span standard barrel lengths for waterfowl and upland hunting as well as configurations suited for home defense. Stop in or check online for current pump action shotgun inventory across all available brands and configurations.

Why is a pump action shotgun reliable in Montana field conditions?

+

The pump action’s reliability in Montana’s cold, wet, and demanding field conditions comes from its manually operated design, which requires no gas system, recoil spring, or automatic cycling mechanism beyond the shooter working the fore-end. Because the action does not depend on the energy of the fired shell to cycle, it feeds and ejects any load from the lightest target shells to the heaviest magnum rounds regardless of temperature, moisture, or fouling. This mechanical simplicity makes the pump action the most dependable shotgun platform for Montana hunters who face freezing waterfowl blinds, cold pheasant fields, and demanding mountain conditions throughout the season.

What pump action shotgun is best for Montana waterfowl hunting?

+

For Montana waterfowl hunting along the Yellowstone River corridor and surrounding wetlands, a 12 gauge pump action with a 28- to 30-inch barrel and a choke specifically rated for steel shot is the standard recommendation. A synthetic stock handles moisture and cold temperatures without warping, making it the most practical choice for early and late season blind hunting along Montana’s waterways. Federal law requires non-toxic shot for all migratory waterfowl hunting in Montana. Always use a steel-rated choke and verify current Montana FWP regulations before heading to the blind.

What is the best pump action shotgun load for Montana pheasant and upland birds?

+

For pheasant hunting across the agricultural land and grassland surrounding Laurel, and for Hungarian partridge and sharp-tailed grouse across Montana’s open prairie country, 12 or 20 gauge loads with #4, #5, or #6 lead shot in 2 3/4- or 3-inch lengths cover most flushing distances effectively. An improved cylinder or modified choke handles most upland hunting situations well. Lead shot is legal for upland game hunting in Montana. Always check current Montana FWP season dates and regulations, and confirm legal hunting areas before heading afield across Carbon and Stillwater counties and the surrounding region.

Can I use a pump action shotgun for deer hunting in Montana?

+

Yes. Pump action shotguns with rifled slugs or sabot slugs are legal for Montana deer hunting and are a practical option in timbered terrain and river bottom country where close-range shots are the norm. Rifled slugs are effective through a smooth-bore barrel, while sabot slugs through a rifled barrel or rifled choke deliver improved accuracy at moderate distances. Montana deer hunters who want maximum slug accuracy should consider a dedicated slug barrel or bolt action slug gun. Always verify current Montana FWP regulations for your specific hunting district and season.

Can I use a pump action shotgun for home defense in Montana?

+

Yes. Pump action shotguns are a proven and practical home defense platform, offering reliable operation with quality buckshot loads and a manually operated action that functions consistently regardless of shell type. A 12 gauge pump with reduced-recoil buckshot delivers significant defensive effectiveness while remaining manageable for most shooters. An 18- to 20-inch barrel improves maneuverability in confined spaces while keeping the configuration in standard shotgun territory without NFA registration. The pump’s distinctive racking sound is widely recognized and the platform’s simplicity makes it accessible to all household members who may need to use it.

What choke should I use for steel shot in my pump action shotgun?

+

Always use a choke specifically rated for steel shot when running non-toxic loads. Improved cylinder or modified chokes are the standard steel shot recommendations, as tighter constrictions can be damaged by the pressure of non-compressible steel pellets and may cause barrel damage. Many modern pump action shotguns come with a steel-rated choke included, and aftermarket extended steel-rated chokes are widely available for popular platforms. Never run steel or other hard non-toxic shot through a choke not specifically rated for its use.

Does On Target Outdoors run background checks on all pump action shotgun sales?

+

Yes. All pump action shotgun purchases at On Target Outdoors include ATF Form 4473 and a NICS background check as required by federal law. Buyers must be at least 18 years of age and meet all applicable federal and Montana state eligibility requirements to complete a purchase. On Target Outdoors complies fully with all applicable state and federal regulations governing the sale and transfer of pump action shotguns.
