Are AR rifles legal in Montana?

+

Yes. AR-platform rifles are legal to purchase, own, and use in Montana for eligible residents. Montana has no state-level assault weapons ban or magazine capacity restrictions beyond what is required under federal law. All purchases require a federal background check and completion of ATF Form 4473. Buyers must be at least 18 years of age and meet all applicable federal and Montana state eligibility requirements to take possession.

What is the difference between an AR-15 and an AR-10?

+

The AR-15 is chambered primarily in 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington with a wide range of additional caliber options, and is the most modular and widely produced semi-automatic rifle platform available. The AR-10 is a larger-format variant chambered in full-size rifle cartridges including .308 Winchester and 6.5 Creedmoor, offering more power and range at the cost of additional weight. AR-15 builds are the top choice for home defense, competition, and range training, while AR-10 platforms are popular for Montana deer and elk hunting where the larger cartridge provides the energy needed for ethical big game harvest.

Can I use an AR rifle for hunting in Montana?

+

Yes. Montana allows centerfire semi-automatic rifles for hunting a wide range of species. AR-10 platform rifles in .308 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor, and similar calibers are legal and effective for Montana deer and elk hunting in appropriate game management units. AR-15 platform rifles in 5.56 NATO are well suited for coyote and predator hunting across Montana’s agricultural land and river bottoms. Always verify current Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks regulations for your specific target species, game management unit, and season before heading afield.

What caliber AR should I buy for Montana predator hunting?

+

For Montana coyote and predator hunting across the open prairie and agricultural land of the Yellowstone Valley, an AR-15 in .223 Remington or 5.56 NATO is the most popular choice, offering minimal wind drift, high velocity, and the capacity for fast follow-up shots when multiple animals are present. .224 Valkyrie and 6.5 Grendel are popular AR-15 caliber upgrades for hunters who want more reach across wider open country. The flat trajectory and low recoil of these calibers make them well suited for the calling and spot-and-stalk predator hunting common across the Laurel and Billings area.

What optic should I put on my AR for Montana use?

+

For home defense and close-range use, a quality red dot sight with a 1 MOA or 2 MOA dot provides fast target acquisition with both eyes open and reliable performance in any lighting condition. For a predator hunting AR that will be used at varying distances across Montana’s open terrain, a low-power variable optic in the 1-6x or 1-8x range offers close-range speed at low power and useful magnification for longer shots at higher settings. For an AR-10 used for deer or elk hunting, a more traditional 3-9x or 4-12x variable scope covers most practical hunting distances effectively.

Do I need a tax stamp for an AR rifle in Montana?

+

A standard AR rifle with a barrel of 16 inches or more and an overall length of 26 inches or more does not require a tax stamp. An AR configured as a short-barreled rifle, with a barrel under 16 inches or an overall length under 26 inches with a stock, is regulated under the National Firearms Act and requires ATF Form 4 registration, a $200 tax stamp, and ATF approval before transfer. On Target Outdoors can assist customers through the NFA process for any regulated AR configurations they are considering.

Does On Target Outdoors run background checks on all AR rifle sales?

+

Yes. All AR rifle purchases at On Target Outdoors include ATF Form 4473 and a NICS background check as required by federal law. Buyers must be at least 18 years of age and meet all applicable federal and Montana state eligibility requirements to complete a rifle purchase. On Target Outdoors complies fully with all applicable state and federal regulations governing the sale and transfer of AR-platform rifles.
